Like many of typography’s loveliest styles, these letters are an import from sign painting, where the style — doubtless because its kit of lines and curves resembles plumbing — is colorfully known as "Modern Gaspipe." These modular letters were an important part of the twentieth century poster, bright and optimistic in the propaganda of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and peremptory in the Constructivism of the young USSR. The starting point of the TT Trailers project was the idea to develop a new generation of narrow typefaces for use in movie credits and posters. Our portfolio already had a modular geometric sans TT Bluescreens, so the new project from the very beginning was in a humanist spirit. In addition, we conducted a small study and found that there are not many modern narrow humanist grotesques on the market. TT Trailers is based on the concept of preserving the amount of white: when changing from thin to bold, the width of characters increases significantly, which ultimately allows you to save an equal amount of white inside and between letters.

As in the case of dynamic contrast, this effect gradually disappears when approaching thin faces.In thick faces, in places such as the “armpits” of the letters MNИ or the junctions of the diagonals of WVvw, there are visual compensators that brighten the bold typefaces. • TT Jenevers is a modern serif with Dutch flavor. The font family features the characteristic details peculiar to Dutch serifs—these are the asymmetrical shape of serifs and an irregular slant of ovals. For example, in the letter “o” there is no slant, but it is present in p-q. In TT Jenevers, both lowercase and uppercase characters are of a large size, which makes it a rather display typeface. At the same time, the big half-ellipse of the lowercase characters does not allow the letters to stick, which allows the implementation of TT Jenevers in text arrays. The italics of the TT Jenevers are slightly narrower as compared to upright faces—this is done to ensure a greater density of the text array.

Zierde is a take on early advertising, small-copy grotesks of the late 19th/early 20th century, and is largely inspired by Miller & Richard’s own range of Grotesques. More importantly, Zierde is accompanied by a large set of ornaments (+200) which hark back to the look-and-feel of the early-modernist arts and crafts movement. The ornaments in, and presentation of, Zierde owe much credit to J.G Schelter & Giesecke’s 1913 type specimen book ‘Die Zierde’. The strong functional uppercase sans-serifs alongside luscious, beautiful patterns in ‘Die Zierde’ make for beautiful combinations. This early-modernist use of grotesk alongside ornament looks bizarre in the eyes of us used to seeing sans-serifs in more formal, sterile settings. The face itself retains some historical flourishes such as the eccentric leaning angle of the italics, the long cross-bar on the ‘G’, the gammy-leg of the ‘R’, a strange ampersand and some irregular terminals across the weights.
