In this watercolor class, we will paint a cute stylized portrait and learn how to mix skin tones with only 3 colors (white is optional for the highlights).

Episode 1. Materials

I will show you the materials I will be using. No need to have the exact materials I have.

Episode 2. Colors

Considering that you don’t have the exact colors I have, let’s test our colors and the combinations we can make from them by doing a swatch. We’ll test the right amount of colors needed for the base skin tone colors, shadows and hair color.

Episode 3. Sketch

I’ll show you how I usually sketch my portraits free hand following the Loomis method.

Episode 4. First Layer

Using the color combination for the base skin tone, let’s start painting!

Episode 5. Shadows

Let’s decide where to paint the shadows and use the color combination we came up during the color swatch.

Episode 6. Hair

Time to color in the hair! We’ll use a darker mixture here to make the face pop out more.

Episode 7. Details

Final details that will make our portrait more interesting and give it more character.

Episode 8. Highlights

This step is optional but if you have white paint, let’s use it for the highlights.

Looking forward to seeing your own version of this stylized portrait. Happy painting!
