Duration: 2h 45m | Format: HD 1920x1080

  • Learn how to create professional-quality superhero concept art for film and TV with this 2.5-hour workshop by Luca Nemolato. Guiding you through his tried-and-tested workflow for creating impressive character designs worthy of blockbuster movies, Luca shares his process and the personal techniques that he’s been refining over many years of working professionally for the entertainment industry.
  • This intermediate-level workshop starts out in Daz Studio where Luca experiments with and establishes a pose for his character. This base model is then a foundational asset to take into ZBrush where all the resculpting work and detailing of the anatomy can take place. Luca shares his tips and tricks for sculpting superhero proportions in ZBrush with believable results.
  • From there, the work continues in Photoshop where Luca reveals how to sketch 2D designs over a rough KeyShot render of the 3D character to explore costume ideas. After designing a few options, the strongest is taken back into ZBrush as a reference, where Luca sculpts the detail and finalizes the overall design in 3D. Once satisfied with the character’s final look and proportions, Marvelous Designer is brought into the mix to help create a realistic, layered cape as the finishing touch for Luca’s superhero, Paladin.
  • As the last step in the workflow, Luca renders the final image using KeyShot. Here, he shares his personal techniques for creating knitted material fabric effects and textures, before returning to Photoshop for the final compositing, digital painting, and post-production work.

Creating great sculpture is very much like creating great Architecture. The foundation and framework has to be built first and it must be strong and contain the necessary landmarks in order to achieve aesthetic success and evoke emotion. In this tutorial, figurative artist and educator John Brown demonstrates how to set up the mannequin frame correctly; what we call the ‘back story’, plotting out the proportions on paper first, constructing the Armature, and blocking out the Boney Forms. You will discover through pattern recognition, the common threads that unite all things figurative… what the masters knew, the Higher Levels of Awareness. Establishing Line of Action, Plumb Line, Compositional Balance, blocking in the movable masses, how narrative affects pose; all omnipotent factors in setting up the Armature correctly and making your work stand out! It is about making the right creative decisions and everything that happens before the muscles go on.

Duration: 2h 06m | Format: HD 1920x1080

  • There are many approaches for designing characters for the screen. Industry veteran Aaron Sims details two of his tried-and-trusted workflows for creating iconic concept designs for film and TV, using Photoshop and ZBrush. As well as guiding you through his production-proven techniques, Aaron shares his thoughts on the importance of conveying personality and character through designs and shares some of the key lessons he’s learned over his 35-year career.
  • Beginning with a 2D workflow in Photoshop, Aaron walks through his personal approach to visualizing a mutated character, using photo-bashing techniques that skillfully cut, splice, and warp multiple layers of human, creature, and organic elements to craft a completely unique design. Discussing the reasons behind his decisions at every step, the lecture details not only how to master photo manipulation for incredible results but also why the techniques and outcomes are his chosen workflows for likenesses, prosthetics, and digital augmentations.
  • Today, artists can create any creature or character imaginable with the tools at their disposal. The second part of the two-hour workshop dives into ZBrush to develop a fully realized and dimensionalized alien character. Explaining why this approach serves well for full-CG characters, Aaron shares his ZBrush workflow, from base mesh to final bust, discussing the importance of anatomy, how to create points of interest in 3D designs, and how to push the envelope to create designs while still creating something an audience can relate to. The 3D workflow concludes with rendering techniques in KeyShot, pushing the settings and playing with various lighting scenarios, before finalizing the design in Photoshop.
