Douglas Kahn, "Earth Sound Earth Signal: Energies and Earth Magnitude in the Arts"
English | ISBN: 0520257804, 0520257553 | 2013 | EPUB | 344 pages | 7 MB
Earth Sound Earth Signal is a study of energies in aesthetics and the arts, from the birth of modern communications in the nineteenth century to the global transmissions of the present day. Douglas Kahn begins by evoking the Aeolian sphere music that Henry David Thoreau heard blowing along telegraph lines and the Aelectrosonic sounds of natural radio that Thomas Watson heard through the first telephone; he then traces the histories of science, media, music, and the arts to the 1960s and beyond. Earth Sound Earth Signal rethinks energy at a global scale, from brainwaves to outer space, through detailed discussions of musicians, artists and scientists such as Alvin Lucier, Edmond Dewan, Pauline Oliveros, John Cage, James Turrell, Robert Barry, Joyce Hinterding, and many others.

Warren J. Samuels, "Erasing the Invisible Hand: Essays on an Elusive and Misused Concept in Economics"
English | ISBN: 0521517257 | 2011 | PDF | 358 pages | 3 MB
This book examines the use, principally in economics, of the concept of the invisible hand, centering on Adam Smith. It interprets the concept as ideology, knowledge, and a linguistic phenomenon. It shows how the principal Chicago School interpretation misperceives and distorts what Smith believed on the economic role of government. The essays further show how Smith was silent as to his intended meaning, using the term to set minds at rest; how the claim that the invisible hand is the foundational concept of economics is repudiated by numerous leading economic theorists; that several dozen identities given the invisible hand renders the term ambiguous and inconclusive; that no such thing as an invisible hand exists; and that calling something an invisible hand adds nothing to knowledge. Finally, the essays show that the leading doctrines purporting to claim an invisible hand for the case for capitalism cannot invoke the term but that other nonnormative invisible hand processes are still useful tools.
The History of Mathematics: A Very Short Introduction by Jacqueline Stedall
2012 | ISBN: 0199599688 | English | 144 Pages | EPUB | 3 MB
This Very Short Introduction explores the rich historical and cultural diversity of mathematical practice, ranging from the distant past to the present. Historian Jacqueline Stedall shows that mathematical ideas are far from being fixed, but are adapted and changed by their passage across periods and cultures. The book illuminates some of the varied contexts in which people have learned, used, and handed on mathematics, drawing on fascinating case studies from a range of times and places, including early imperial China, the medieval Islamic world, and nineteenth-century Britain. By drawing out some common threads, Stedall provides an introduction not only to the mathematics of the past but to the history of mathematics as a modern academic discipline.

Archimedes: Mathematical Genius of the Ancient World (Great Minds of Science) by Mary Gow
2005 | ISBN: 0766025020 | English | 128 pages | PDF | 20 MB
Because more information has survived about Archimedes's contributions than about his life, most of this book wisely focuses on his mathematical observations 22 centuries ago. Descriptions of Syracuse and Alexandria, cities that influenced his social and educational development, introduce readers to ancient Greek society and give them a fuller understanding of the importance of Archimedes's discoveries. The next chapters describe the significance of his work regarding levers, buoyancy, geometry, and pi; and of such inventions as the pulley and Archimedes's screw. The legendary Eureka! moment involving the metallic composition of the king's crown and a chapter devoted to the man's fondness for mathematical puzzles enliven text, which is composed mainly of short, declarative sentences. Footnotes are appropriately referenced, and citations from primary sources include the writings of Plutarch and Cicero. Differentiation is made between factually recorded accounts and those attributed to legend. Good-quality, black-and-white illustrations add information to the clear text, which is presented in large font. Three activities encourage student inquiry. With few other titles available for this audience, this entry in the series could be especially useful for students requesting books about ancient history or mathematicians.

More Tapestry Crochet: Digital by Carol Ventura
2014 | ASIN: B00IC9OZT8 | English | 176 Pages | EPUB | 9 MB
Tapestry crochet differs from ordinary crochet in its texture, tension, and how colors are manipulated. Two or more yarns are worked at the same time to create intricate or simple motifs. One yarn is carried while the other yarn is worked over it. Depending on the tension and number of yarns carried, the finished fabric can be stiff or supple, and may take any flat or three-dimensional form. Tapestry crochet has the flexibility and portability of crochet, but the finished pieces look woven.
The tapestry crocheted shoulder bags of highland Guatemala and the hats of Cameroon inspired the wide variety of flat and three-dimensional projects in this book. Instructions, graphs, and photos are included for both right-handed and left-handed crocheters. In fact, this revised edition includes hundreds of color illustrations and photographs and links to online resources. Besides full instructions, information is shared about the history of tapestry crochet around the world and special graph papers and instructions help readers to design their own projects and motifs!
