With the typeface Josef K *, Julia Sysmäläinen turns once more to Franz Kafka’s writing style. This time the designer of FF Mister K is not drawn to the works Kafka created by night as an author, but to those he produced during daytime in his professional life as a high-ranking, confident bureaucrat – Dr Franz Kafka. Typeface Josef K echoes Kafka’s prestigious status at his working place, the Workmen’s Accident Insurance Institute of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is a bold script with its ductus derived from a broad-nibbed ink pen and combines a clear, self-confident stroke with the calligraphic features so typical for Franz Kafka’s handwriting. With more than 2500 glyphs and Western, Central European and Extended Cyrillic character sets, it is a truly pan-European script. More…

Sada Arabic 6xOTF $129

Sada Arabic $129

6 OTF Fonts | Designer: Saad D. Abulhab | Design Date: Aug 5, 2015

http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/arabetics/sada/

Sada is a text font designed with hand held devices and ebooks in mind. Glyphs are designed to be larger than usual and very clear with soft visual characteristics and many traditional Arabic calligraphic transitional features incorporated to improve legibility. The word “sada” means “echo” in Arabic. Even though Sada is a cursive style font it offers clearly distinguished and visually unified letter shapes in every position of a word. Sada supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. It comes with three weights, regular, bold, and ultra-light. Each weight has normal and left-slanted “italic” styles. The script design of this font family follows the Arabetics Mutamathil Taqlidi style and utilizes varying x-heights. The Mutamathil Taqlidi type style uses one glyph per every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined by the Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for each freely-connecting letter in an Arabic text. Sada includes the required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all vowel diacritic ligatures. Sada’s soft-vowel diacritic marks (harakat) are only selectively positioned with most of them appearing on similar lower or upper positions to emphasize they are not part of letters. Kashida is zero width glyph.

Hazim Arabic $69
2 OTF Fonts | Designer: Saad D. Abulhab | Design Date: Aug 5, 2015
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/arabetics/hazim/
Hazim is a display font designed with isolated letters. It uses thin white slits positioned within extra bold black space glyphs emphasizing the main visual characteristics of the Arabetic letters in two positions: initial/medial and final/isolated. The spacing widths between glyphs match that of the slits to give a virtual cursive look and feel. The name Hazim was chosen to honor a friend of the designer, Hazim al-Khafaji. Hazim supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. It comes with one weight and a left-slanted “italic”. Hazim includes the required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all vowel diacritic ligatures. Hazims’s soft-vowel diacritic marks (harakat) are only selectively positioned with most of them appearing on similar lower or upper positions to make sure they do not interfere with the letters. Kashida is enabled.

Vatican is a calligraphic face. The lower case is influenced by the lettering of Arthur Baker but the caps are more formal, the shape of the Cap V reminded me of a Bishops Mitre which led eventually to the name. The lighter weight works particually well in small text pieces

http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/canadatype/fab/

Basic Latin/English letters West European diacritics Euro Ligatures Central Europe Baltic Turkish Romanian

It’s 1984 and everything has sideburns. Shoulder-padded “dress for success” is in, with power suits for women, black and white layers for men, neon brights for the youngsters. Maggie’s “enemy within” and “no society” speeches preface the arrival of shopping malls and corporate status symbols. The economy is a philosophy and accountants carry ambiguous but very sophisticated-sounding titles. Thousands of words and expressions are reduced to initials or monosyllabic sounds. Synthesizers are very refined and the music is very catchy. The Macintosh and MTV are making waves. Brands are lifestyles. “Yuppy,” Yummy," “Bobo,” “Dinky” and “Woopie” are standard consumer categories in advertising lingo. The Volkswagen identity, only 5 years old now, is all the rage in design. VAG Rundschrift, by all appearances a rounded and slightly condensed Futura, is everywhere. Tube design is king.

Fast forward two dozen years. Replay, but bigger and much louder. Fab. Let’s dance.

Fab is Canada Type’s tribute to the Eighties. It’s a five-font unicase family that brings tube design into the 21st century. The main font is an all-in-one treatment of the shiny roundness that the 1980s were. Fab White is a tightly packed thick outline font that conveys luscious contentedness like nothing else. The Fab Trio package is very useful for layered and colorful design, with the Black style serving as a backdrop, the Bold style as the front forms, and the Fill style for inlining.

Fab comes in all popular formats and contains support for Western, Central and Eastern European languages, as well as Baltic, Esperanto, Maltese, Turkish and Celtic/Welsh languages.

It has cursive forms, with highly slanted and condensed characters, giving continuity to the over all feel of bodies of text. The added flourishing available enhances the beauty of the forms, making display images exude the richness of royalty. And the use of the frames (a separate font available with the Pro package) and panels (also found in the Flourishes version) can add even more grace to designs. Luxury was created with the new Bride in mind. The font is ideal for wedding invitations and events where opulence is celebrated. Few formal scripts have the elegance of traditional copperplate appeal combined with the newness of 21st century design.
