This modernized rustic Baroque Roman face paraphrases freely its model from the first half of the 18th century. The shape of the letters has been cleared from all unevenness and softness, but has retained its lively expression. It is deliberately rather cooler than the reverently digitized Baroque Roman type faces, since it was necessary to adjust it with regard to the visual experience of the contemporary reader. In addition, it has bold designs and aligning figures, which also considerably extends the range of its application. It is an entirely reliable text type face for the most demanding extensive works. The original spark for Nordic Narrow came to designer René Verkaart one day while drinking a glass of “Apfelschlore” (a carbonated water and apple juice mix). On the bottle logo he saw an intriguing “a”, and he started to sketch on a new typeface. Though this single glyph served as an inspiration, the end result was something quite different. One of the trademarks of the typeface is the diagonal mid strokes. A reference to the Nordic runes, which he studied during the design process. Even though Nordic Narrow has its base in a geometric grid, it still manages to keep an warm analogue touch.

The avant garde followed suit. Niedermann Grotesk is based on the everyday type that appeared in early modernist collages, journals and manifestos. It is a peculiar style of lettering—which was originally inspired by the Sachplakat (object poster) work of Lucian Bernhard—and adapted for hot metal in 1908 by Heinz Hoffmann. 100 years ago, the style became a workhorse of the German printing industry. Niedermann Grotesk is an updated variant, referencing the original poster art, each letter carefully drawn with an old brush.
