Inspired by the boisterous wood types of the nineteenth century, Manicotti pushes the reversed-stress French Clarendon style to its decorative extreme. Its thick tops and bottoms and massive slab serifs overtake the short vertical stems, creating an oddly dense typographic texture. Originally drawn as an all-caps poster face, Manicotti was honored by the Type Directors Club in 2007. Ross revisited the design a couple years later, adding lowercase, extended language support, alternates and ornaments. The result is a contemporary take on a rambunctious style, reminiscent of Spaghetti Western films, rugged trails and rowdy saloons.

BQE is the versatile type family from Identikal. The simple geometry of constant counter space and identical horizontals, with verticals serving as the main index of the weight and width. The forms inflate geometrically, but their core remains unchanged. As a condensed family with a unique personality BQE is extremely unique, and offers large depth of application.

I enjoy and am inspired by many blackletter designs, but find that their uppercase characters are generally too complex to be very usable. I also found that very few, if any were designed with perfect 45 degree angles. I set out to design a textura blackletter with unique features and a usable uppercase. What resulted is an interesting, yet usable, geometric design with unusual features that make it stand out from existing texturas.

Based on the lettering used on Alan Turing’s famous code-breaking machine at Bletchley Park, the “Bombe”, and the subsequent British answer to the German Enigma machine, the Typex. Research done at Bletchley Park on their restored and antique machines provided the inspiration. The unusual shapes for the capitals have all been retained - the square O, the monospaced characters and other eccentricities that make it unique. This reference material was then extended to the numerals (which did not exist in the original) and a full international character complement. The initial design of the bombe was produced in 1939 at the UK Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park by Alan Turing, with an important refinement devised in 1940 by Gordon Welchman. It was based on a device that had been designed in 1938 in Poland at the Biuro Szyfrów (Cipher Bureau) by cryptologist Marian Rejewski, and known as the “cryptologic bomb” (Polish: bomba kryptologiczna). The Bombe was used to break the German Enigma code on a daily basis, and was a vital part of the Allied war effort. The British “Typex" (alternatively, Type X or TypeX) machines were an adaptation of the commercial German Enigma with a number of enhancements that greatly increased its security. It was used from 1937 until the mid-1950s, when other more modern military encryption systems came into use.

Digitized handwriting fonts are a perfect way to give documents the “very special touch”. Invitations look simply better when handwritten than when printed in bland Arial or Times New Roman. Short handwritten notes look authentic and appealing. There are numerous occasions where handwritten text makes a better impression. “Luitpold Handwriting” is a beautiful typeface that mimics true handwriting closely. Use Luitpold Handwriting to create stunningly beautiful designs easily.

It’s surprising - it can take more time and effort to make something deliberately and artfully imperfect than it does to make a more conventional design. We certainly found this to be the case when designing ‘SpeedSketch’. Perhaps a more accurate name would have been ‘SlowDraw’ but that wouldn’t really capture the essence of the finished design.

Chiseld in binary code. Tetraktys traces the aesthetic of wedge and curve in Latin inscriptions over the sixties and brings it to the digital present-day. The Swiss Designer Ernst Friz created the type “Friz Quadrata”, which is the inspiration for Tetraktys. Tetraktys adopts the structure of circle, triangle & square as well as their internal forms. Even in its richness of detail Tetraktys strives for formal reduction. This is remarkable in bigger font sizes and calms the rhythm in reading sizes. Many of the letters of the italic counterpart pocess a particular structure without losing the its formal link.
