Trench Sans is family of fonts intended for use in small-sized texts – about 5–10pt. In spirit, Trench Sans is an agate type. An agate is a a unit of typographical measure, 5.5 points high. Like many other agate types, Trench Sans features ink-traps as part of its design. These are little wells in corners where ink would otherwise clog-up and make the printing appear too dark. Other functional aspects for high performance in small sizes, which have been added to Trench Sans, include compact letter shapes, open counters, appropriate spacing, and short descenders to better accommodate for tighter text-setting. There are a number of alternates included in each font: the standard form of the capital “I” in all fonts has serifs; the “a” is two-storied and the “g” is single-storied. Over stylistic sets, users can access a capital “I” without serifs, a double-storied “g”, and alternate forms of “M”, “N”, “W”, and “w”. Grist was designed originally as a logo proposal for art-pop band Fischerspooner. It was one of a series of ideas exploring ways of taking an upper case serif font and making it ‘graphic’, so like a logo rather than a typeface. I tried this in various ways – by making the serifs thicker, or making the serif oversized and angular. These generally weren’t very successful. The most successful version stripped out the thin stress of the typeface and added a circle as an occasional serif. This made a dotting effect when set as multiple words. This was presented, to be rejected and a more neutral serif typeface used in what became a very untypographic series of record sleeves. Having written a blog post and reminding myself about the project, I wanted to develop this serif stencil circle typeface further. As it happened during the Fischerspooner project and in a fit of enthusiasm I had drawn a complete A-Z. What I liked about the idea originally was that the typeface was made up of these big, dramatic shapes, either the circle or bits of circle or these swashy triangles or rectangles. There were no small fussy shapes, so it could be cut out and used as a stencil. The serif was a useful connecting device and the letters were, generally, readable.

Trench Slab is part of the Trench superfamily, which also includes Trench Round, and a special series of fonts designed to print text is very small point sizes – Trench Sans. All of the Trench fonts include large, prominent ink-traps. Like Trench Round, Trench Slab is intended for use in text that is to be set in any larger-than-normal-reading-size. It may be used for shorter passages of text, or very large display applications. The idea for Pezzo was born when I saw an old copper monogram stencil. The script forms are inspired by titles and signature inscriptions of several Dutch seventeenth century paintings. These inscriptions are simpler variations of what was commonly used at that time - brushes were used rather than quills. There is little variation between horizontal and vertical strokes and that’s what caught my eye. By default, the brush strokes formed simple round endings. Combined with the unusual breaks in the copper stencils, I considered this treatment would create an interesting contemporary script. Pezzo’s alternate characters, used in conjunction with the regular characters, gives you flexibility when characters overlap, particularly on repeat ascenders and descenders. Pezzo is ideal for boutique logos, menus, invitations, announcements, certificates, brochures, headlines, and anywhere you need the elegance of script but with a contemporary boldness. I hope you'll enjoy using Pezzo as much as I had fun creating it!

Over the next 12 years Burke, who was the company’s Director of Typographic Development from 1948 through 1963, continued to expand the family. Trade Gothic Next is the 2008 revision of Jackson Burke’s design. Developed over a prolonged period of time, the original Trade Gothic showed many inconsistencies. Under the direction of Linotype’s Type Director Akira Kobayashi, American type designer Tom Grace, a graduate of the MA Typeface Design in Reading, was redesigned, revised and expand the Trade Gothic family. Many details were improved, such as the terminals and stroke endings, symbols, and the spacing and kerning. The Eskapade family is the result of research confronting Roman and German blackletter forms, mainly fraktur letters. The idea is to adapt these broken forms for a contemporary use instead of creating a faithful revival of a historical typeface. On one hand, Eskapade is conceived for continuous text in books and magazines with a good legibility in smaller sizes, and on the other hand Eskapade – especially the Fraktur – directs the readers attention in headlines with its mixture of round and straight forms, like in ‘e’, ‘g’ and ‘o’. It can also be used for visual identities, logotypes and packaging. Eskapade Roman adapts a humanist structure, but keeps it more condensed than other old-style serifs. The reason behind this stems from the idea to resemble closer the Fraktur style and to create a balanced harmony in mixed text-settings. Legibility is enhanced by a rather low contrast between thick and thin strokes and tall x-height. With its smooth design Eskapade offers an airy and light typographic colour. Eskapade italic is based on the Cancellaresca script and shows some particularities in its condensed and round forms. Its structure provided the base for Eskapade Frakur italic. Eskapade Fraktur is more contrasted and slightly bolder than the usual darkness of a regular weight. The innovative Eskapade Fraktur italic, equally based on the Cancellaresca script, is secondarily influenced, especially the capital letters, by the Sütterlin forms. A unique script practiced in Germany in the short period between 1915 and 1941. Although there are many typefaces in the fraktur style available, only a few of them include true italic forms. Those are more slanted uprights though, rather than proper italics. This motivated and made extensive experimentation with the italic shapes possible and resulted in some unusual and interesting solutions. In addition to standard capitals, Eskapade Fraktur regular and italic offer a second set of more decorative capitals with double-stroke lines for amplifying experimental use and creative application.
