In 1948, Mergenthaler Linotype released the first weights of Trade Gothic, designed by Jackson Burke. Over the next 12 years Burke, who was the company’s Director of Typographic Development from 1948 through 1963, continued to expand the family. Trade Gothic Next is the 2008 revision of Jackson Burke’s design. Developed over a prolonged period of time, the original Trade Gothic showed many inconsistencies. Under the direction of Linotype’s Type Director Akira Kobayashi, American type designer Tom Grace, a graduate of the MA Typeface Design in Reading, was redesigned, revised and expand the Trade Gothic family. Many details were improved, such as the terminals and stroke endings, symbols, and the spacing and kerning. Moreover, there are newly added compressed widths and heavy weights perfect for setting even more powerful headlines. Trade Gothic Next brings more features and better quality for today’s demanding typographers.

The Eskapade family is the result of research confronting Roman and German blackletter forms, mainly fraktur letters. The idea is to adapt these broken forms for a contemporary use instead of creating a faithful revival of a historical typeface. On one hand, Eskapade is conceived for continuous text in books and magazines with a good legibility in smaller sizes, and on the other hand Eskapade – especially the Fraktur – directs the readers attention in headlines with its mixture of round and straight forms, like in ‘e’, ‘g’ and ‘o’. It can also be used for visual identities, logotypes and packaging. Eskapade Roman adapts a humanist structure, but keeps it more condensed than other old-style serifs. The reason behind this stems from the idea to resemble closer the Fraktur style and to create a balanced harmony in mixed text-settings. Legibility is enhanced by a rather low contrast between thick and thin strokes and tall x-height. With its smooth design Eskapade offers an airy and light typographic colour. Eskapade italic is based on the Cancellaresca script and shows some particularities in its condensed and round forms. Its structure provided the base for Eskapade Frakur italic. Eskapade Fraktur is more contrasted and slightly bolder than the usual darkness of a regular weight. The innovative Eskapade Fraktur italic, equally based on the Cancellaresca script, is secondarily influenced, especially the capital letters, by the Sütterlin forms. A unique script practiced in Germany in the short period between 1915 and 1941. Although there are many typefaces in the fraktur style available, only a few of them include true italic forms. Those are more slanted uprights though, rather than proper italics. This motivated and made extensive experimentation with the italic shapes possible and resulted in some unusual and interesting solutions. In addition to standard capitals, Eskapade Fraktur regular and italic offer a second set of more decorative capitals with double-stroke lines for amplifying experimental use and creative application.

In developing Vitesse, we outlined the challenges that highly structured typefaces most often encounter. One test of whether a typeface’s recipe is too simple is whether it reduces the letters D and O to the same shape, an obvious (but common) blow to legibility. A typeface is too doctrinaire if it obliterates natural subtleties in the alphabet, such as the grace of the lowercase a, the gentle incline of the figure 5, or the ballet of curves that defines a well-balanced ampersand. A well-planned design program will prevent a font from becoming overgrown, and keep its handsome S and G from becoming lost in a thicket of serifs. And letters like the lowercase f, t, and r, whose compact profiles offer limited space for embellishment, must not become casualties to the design, but instead emerge as the font’s proudest moments. Instead of using the rounded rectangle as a motif, the strategy we devised for Vitesse was to use a more sophisticated shape as its central theme: a modified rectangle with flat surfaces above and below, gently curved sides, and quick turns at the corners. The complexity of these ingredients allows Vitesse to escape the grid when necessary, helping to preserve both the natural poise of intricate letters, and the typeface’s personality throughout its complete range of styles. The design that emerged has many of the qualities of a beloved sports car: Vitesse is agile, steady, suave, confident, and stylish.
