FS ITV Reem Font Family

The commercial television network ITV, in collaboration with broadcast agency Rudd Studio, invited Fontsmith to join a team of top creatives working to build a modern, vital brand, that reflected content, and delivered a greater visual consistency throughout the network’s various communication channels.

Archia Font Family

Archia is a sans serif typeface based on geometric shapes and “tech” approach. The result is a modern and unorthodox font family that is ideally suited for logotypes, branding, editorial design as well as web and screen design. Archia is available in six weights: thin, light, regular, medium, semibold and bold.

Sanomat Font Family

Sanomat was drawn by Paul Barnes as the primary headline typeface for Sami Valtere’s 2013 redesign of the Helsingin Sanomat, the most widely read quality national daily newspaper in Finland. The redesign shifted the paper’s format from a large-scale broadsheet to the much smaller tabloid size. The tabloid is laid out on a strict grid of square elements, and Sanomat was designed to play against this, with its organic form bringing life and warmth to the precise underlying page structure.

Vatican is a calligraphic face. The lower case is influenced by the lettering of Arthur Baker but the caps are more formal, the shape of the Cap V reminded me of a Bishops Mitre which led eventually to the name. The lighter weight works particually well in small text pieces.

Montello started out as an Illustrator exercise (a skill I am still learning). I made a couple of glyphs for fun, then realized it would make a nice font. The result is Montello. Montello is a classic connected script font, very neat and (in my humble opinion) not an eye-sore either. Montello comes with a whole bunch of ligatures for letters that just won’t connect nicely.

Schnyder X Condensed Font Family

Schnyder was designed by Berton Hasebe and Christian Schwartz for the 2013 top-to-bottom redesign of T, the New York Times Style Magazine by creative director Patrick Li and his team. This typeface exists comfortably in the grey area between type and lettering, drawing inspiration from Beaux Arts-era typefaces and a piece of pointed pen lettering from Switzerland that was very precise in its thick and thin strokes, but with organic and unusual structures for invidvidual letters and great variations in character widths from line to line.

FS Champions - Custom Typeface of UEFA Champions League

UEFA and design agency Radiant Studios asked us to begin exploring the potential for a bespoke font family for the UEFA Champions League brand identity. The tournament’s logotype uses a traditional serif font style with a bold and elegant football that is suggested by a pattern of stars. These elements serve their purpose as a symbol of the world’s best club football competition. The challenge for us was to maintain and carry over this prestige into a typographic personality whilst subtly modernising and injecting energy into the brand.
