Joel believes that if all we do is approach lighting from a technical process, the best you will end up with is a bunch of lighting ratios, schematics and the ability to hold a flash-meter. What we all want is to create killer images that have impact. This is why we must approach the photographic process from a creative artistic perspective. Yes, there are technical aspects to the process, but the foundation is built on something much greater, the ability to think like an artist and use the greatest tool of all, the creative mind. After Joel takes you though how to choose the right modifier, there is no lighting technique on the planet that you can't replicate.
In this tutorial, I walk you through my process of creating natural looking, dynamic portraits using artificial lights. I show you how to examine existing light in the room, and discuss how that informs the process of balancing it with additional lighting. I will also take you step-by-step through my editing process, opening up each Photoshop File and going through them layer by layer. This collection discusses 2 different images, full of lighting diagrams, BTS photos & video, commentary, and full edits of each image. Also included is a Lightroom Preset I use to edit and test images before making selects.
First part: theory and practice.
Review definitions of quality and hardness of light, various lighting types and techniques, influence of a lighting setup on the perception of the proportions of the subject, etc.
Practice with a gypsum bust.
Second part: working with a live model. Theory and practice recommendations; tips and techniques regularly used by the author in his work. Main composition lines in a portrait, etc.
