Through the process of visual production we will explore the photographic concept of aperture. New and seasoned creatives will learn to draw representations of the camera aperture sharpening cognitive awareness within their personal journey of photography. Inspired by the visual pathway within the brain, we begin with a comparison between the eye and camera lens, stretching our minds beyond photographic principles to explore how a deeper understanding of camera aperture is possible within the world of drawing. Next, we will cover the basics of camera aperture, deconstructing a few cameras from manual to digital medium format. Lightweight demos pave the way to detailed meta data filled image examples from some of my favorite stock photography sites. After we have had some aperture prep we dive into two drawing exercises, beginning to play with the idea that drawing can assist us in remembering a concept. Bonus exercise: Drawing the aperture using a tablet. Once we have been immersed in the concept of aperture and how to draw the mechanism we will take on the final project, Drawing the aperture scale in the style of your choice. Let’s be inspired by the inner workings of the camera and equally, the neural mechanisms that enable us to produce a recognizable drawing of an object. How does this visual production experience influence how an object is imprinted in the brain? Something to consider. . . Photography means drawing with light.
