This videotape has been made from an original black and white film, which was produced in 1958 at Stanford University. Although both the visual and auditory qualities of this old record are poor, it is nonetheless the best visual record that exists of Dr. Erickson at work in his younger years.
The content of the film surrounds a young lady called Ruth in whom Dr. Erickson induces a state of trance.
During the session Dr. Erickson reverses the subject’s understanding of left and right and up and down and yes and no, thus the name “Reverse Set”. It is a very valuable record as it contains the only visual record of Dr. Erickson using nonverbal approaches to induce catalepsy and an unusually complex form of ideomotor signalling in trance induction.
