This course in SAS is designed to help you learn by examples; by avoiding stressful approaches based on memorization. At each step, we highlight the essential rules that will set you up for success. We offer a lot of practice tests, most of which are focused on helping you understand why the program works the way it does. Whether you are ready to prepare for the exam or trying to acquire new skills in SAS, this course is designed for you. The first thing you should realize is that SAS, however complex it might seem, can be broken down into independent, easy to understand and describe elements: DATA STEP, PROC STEPS, MACRO, GLOBAL STATEMENTS AND OPTIONS. Once you can identify these elements (literally each SAS code can be broken down into a combination of these elements), you can progressively learn to understand any SAS code regardless of the complexity of the problem it might be designed to address. Two other important characteristics of the program to point out: (1) Conceptually, SAS processes data one record at a in an area called PROGRAM DATA VECTOR; (2) SAS processes data along the rows (not along the columns), which can seem to be counter-intuitive to many coming from other experiences (R, Python, SQL…).
