Create 3D worlds to share with creative directors, tell more dynamic stories, and streamline your creative process. Industry professional Nick Hiatt covers his entire process in Maya, Substance, Redshift, and Photoshop, but the techniques in this training are not software dependent. Learn to use whichever tools you’re most familiar with to create unique characters, detailed environments to place them in, and how to arrange everything into a dynamic, cohesive sequence.

Lesson 1
Character
In this lesson, Nick will first cover the basic terms and tools involved with sequence illustration. You will then craft a story concept and jump into Daz 3D to begin creating your own character. From here, you’ll take your character to Maya to layer on even more detail. Nick will even cover how to alter your 3D textures in Photoshop or Substance Painter.

Lesson 2
Sets
In this lesson, Nick will show you how to create sets using a blend of custom modeling and 3D assets. First, you’ll plan out your set design and block things out with primitives. Then by building on top of these basic structures with pre-made kits, you’ll see just how quickly your set can come to life. Once you have an idea of which parts will be photographed, you’ll go back and fine-tune each visible area of the set.

Lesson 3
Shot Design
In the previous two lessons, you created characters and sets. Now you’ll combine these two elements together to set up compelling camera shots. It’s important to make sure your framing, lighting, and even set details are serving the overall narrative – don’t be afraid to alter geometry if it’ll make for a better frame.

Lesson 4
Painting
In this lesson, you’ll put the final polish on your 3D renders. Nick will go over several post-production techniques like motion blur, color correction, character touchups, set touchups and environment effects. There are many possibilities in this stage, but be careful not to go overboard. A little bit of post-production can go a long way, so take a step back every once in a while to see whether your changes are helping to tell the overall story.
