I encourage everyone to share their portrait drawings/renderings/sculptures at their current level. This is your “before”. We will then share our results after the course is completed and I guarantee that you will be awestruck at how much you've improved in your drawing skills.

We will start sketching and analyzing different versions of the basic Loomis model of the planes of the face.
We will then mold and shape our head sculpts with our choice of a sculpting medium into the Loomis average head. “You need to know the average head to draw what is not average--which is everybody.” 

The actual process of sculpting:

1. Sculpt very basic Loomis head with simple basic features
2. Let clay dry
3. Sand the sculpture and define the planes
4. Let clay dry. Add smaller features eg. nose and mouth
5. Let dry
6. Add details and smaller planes to nose and mouth

After we model our own Loomis head with clay, we will then analyze a photo reference and learn how to apply our model to our drawing.

We will also learn drills for warm ups you can do in the future to continue to develop and advance your skills.

It will be much easier to remember the planes of the face after the completion of this project and you will see that your drawings will vastly improve because you will be able to conceive form much more clearly and effortlessly.
