You'll make a rad project like a custom hand painted tote bag or paint a white denim jacket!

Plan ahead....chemicals need 2 hours to settle before you can begin painting. Fabric should also be washed first. You can be researching what you want to paint, sketching you design on paper, and doing the wash while the chemicals set.

A Run Down of the Concept:

In a reactive dye, a chromophore contains a substituent that reacts with the substrate. Reactive dyes have good fastness properties owing to the covalent bonding that occurs during dyeing. Reactive dyes are most commonly used in dyeing of cellulose like cotton or flax, but also wool is dyeable with reactive dyes. ~Wikipedia

It's a really cool dying method and one of the most colorfast as well.

What You'll Need:

- An un-dyed (white or natural) cellulose fabric item (use cotton)  (tote bag, apron, tea towel, White denim Jacket, ect.)

-Synthrapol SP Detergent (washing detergent) (need less than a pint)

-Sodium Alginate Thickener for cotton (4oz is plenty for this project) (derivative of seaweed)

-Urea (1lb is plenty)

-4 Color Dye Starter kit with Soda Ash Dye Fixer 

- Calgon Water Softener (optional) (use if you have hard water)

- Hot Water

- Cotton fabric item (Denim jacket, tote bag, tea towel, ect)

-Paper Towels

-Paint Brushes (I use a few size 6 round for finer lines but you do you)

- 1 large Jar w/ lid & several small jars (1 small jar per color)

- Iron

- Clothing Steamer or Iron w/ high steam setting

-Plastic Table Cloth to protect you table & surrounding area

- Rubber Gloves
