When photography was first introduced, the photographers had to shoot black and white photos, simply because technology didn’t allow them to do color photography yet. Then, as color photography was invented in the late 30′s, black and white photography became a form of art with a large following. Film Noir™ photography is a style with accents to the dark and dramatic early film style. The French word “Noir” means “Black” or “Dark”.

Simple to use, stunning results
Film Noir offers a simple and elegant user interface that is geared toward achieving results with just a few clicks. The application comes with over 20 presets that give great results. Starting from one of the available presets you can tweak your images in the Dark Room and store those as your own creations. Adjusting brightness/contrast or highlights/midtones/shadows, it’s all possible. But there’s more…

Color Filters
Experienced black & white photographers frequently use color filters to adjust the tonal range of a photograph. By adding a filter color, you can achieve a complete different experience for the same photo. For instance, when you want the blue colors to appear lighter, you typically use a blue filter. To make the blues darker, you choose a yellow filter.

Adding color filters gives you flexibility over the appearence of the final result. Click here for a more thorough explanation of color filters.

Color Tones and Camera Films
While you’re in the Dark Room, check out the settings for Color Tones. This unique feature will add ambiance to your photos with a mere click. And with the Camera Film setting you can select from the most popular black/white film types that are used by photographers; Agfa, Kodak and Ilford films, they are there and provide that unique, typical, tint that is typical for that film.

Film Grain
Film Grain, or granularity, is one of the characteristics for black/white photography. A certain film brand almost guaranteed a typical grain characteristic that belonged to that brand/type of film. With Film Noir, you’re free to add grain or noise to your results and adjust the level or intensity.

Vignetting
Vignetting is a reduction of an image’s brightness or saturation at the periphery compared to the image center; or better known as the dark corners of the image. It is sometimes purposely introduced for creative effect, such as to draw attention to the center of the frame or to add drama. With Film Noir, adding vignetting is a matter of selecting the type, size and hardness.
