After a career in the design industry and as an educator, Don Sterrenburg brought his wealth of knowledge and experience to bear in creating Summa. Sterrenburg is truly a master in the art of pen and ink. “There was excitement and renewed effort with each arrival of new art for Summa from Don.” relates Delve Withrington, principal at Delve Fonts. He continues: “It was a pleasure to work with Don. The artwork he prepared for production of the digital typeface was confident, and precise — leaving no room to misinterpret the intent. That alone made work go very smoothly on our end.” Delve Fonts worked closely with Sterrenburg for years to transform his magnificent drawings into font software, sending type specimens (proofs) for review and faithfully completing the revisions he requested after examining the materials carefully. The resulting typeface is a testament to the effort of everyone involved. The classic roman spirit and bracketed, cupped serifs together with the narrow width and elevated x-height of Summa give it a lofty, elegant appearance and an economic use of space. The ‘true italic’ counterpart style (not simply slanted or oblique) has a more calligraphic influence in the letterforms is a well balanced and thoughtful adaptation of the regular design. Summa Inline is a fascinating stylistic variation that takes the design of Summa to another place entirely. It is nothing short of a complete re-imagining of the structure of the forms found in the regular. The inline seems to twist in places, dropping out where strokes cross over each other and creating an almost three dimensional, ribbon-like appearance at times. In addition, the inline variant of Summa includes a set of swash capital letters that allow designers to easily give their setting that extra little dash of calligraphic flare and exuberance. Summa’s height and compact measure make it an ideal choice for use in headlines, book titles, on posters, for drop-caps, and other instances where large display sizes are needed in tight spaces but heavy weights are not desired.
