Loosely inspired by the signage typography of early-twentieth-century Danish desinger Knud V. Engelhardt and deeply rooted the Danish typography tradition, Ovink is a typeface optimized for legibility for distances both near and far. Named after the legibility researcher Gerrit Willem Ovink, the typeface is informed by experimental legibility investsigations of distance and time thresholds—contributing to Ovink’s signature two-storey ‘a’, rounded-spine ‘s’, long-tailed ‘j’ and ‘t’, and open-aperture ‘e’, among other optimizations. These characteristics make Ovink an exceptional choice for distance applications such as signage, but the high regularity of the letters, as well as Ovink’s wide span of weights and glyph variations, also make Ovink highly suitable for running text. Ovink was created by designer, researcher, and lecturer Sofie Beier, who also designed Ovink’s bestselling predecessor, Engel.
