Sequenz Font Family

Merriam-Webster defines the word sequence as ‘a succession of repetitions of a melodic phrase or harmonic pattern each in a new position’. Typography makes use of this concept – a collection of repeating shapes, arranged in sequential order to convey information.

Receiving this information can happen intellectually, by decoding the symbols, and intuitively by taking in the aesthetics of the word image. In most cases the act of reading is a mixture of the two. In Sequenz the aesthetic aspect is emphasized by regarding text as a pattern of black and white strokes, and by calling established ideas of the type design practice into question. We asked ourselves, does the bar of the t need to be on the x-height? Can the C be closed on the right side? Is there room for a sledgehammer in a piano concerto? The answers: no, yes, and yes, as long as you don’t destroy the piano. Sequenz and Frequenz are different manifestations of these principles.
