Like your (hopefully) son-in-law, Liminal is at ease in every kind of occasion: from a dry annual report, a romantic novel or a gossipy blog. Liminal is a Venetian style serif family whose design is inspired by the typographic forms conceived in Italy at the time where my fellow citizens were as cool and innovative as the nowadays tech-nerds inhabiting the Silicon Valley.

Nevertheless I'll be lying if I did not mention that the real inspiration is a more recent typeface designed exactly 100 years ago by Bruce Rogers: Centaur. That font has always been one of my favorite, but unfortunately also part of a long list of those typefaces, that as a designer, you want to use but that you are never able to because of its overly distinct shapes that distract the reader from the content.

Centaur was also designed to be used at a substantially large text size (thus the small x-eight of the letterforms), reducing its versatility.

With all of this in mind, Liminal is a modern take on this model and is conceived to be used both at small and large sizes without any need of optical adjustments. The wide range of weights (from Light to Heavy) makes it ideal to work in any environment from low-res screens to coated stock. In the heaviest weights, Liminal is displays distinctive calligraphic qualities that make it the perfect choice for display use.

Liminal is a multi-purpose font that, while developed with the most advanced font design techniques, can sit well in a old Italian printer's bookshop just as well as in a Cupertino-designed iOS app.
