Named after its blue residential buildings, My Longley designed Blåkulla while she was living in Hagalund, just outside Stockholm. This single-style, all-caps display face started off as her candidate work during her studies at Konstfack. The inspiration for Blåkulla came one day when Longley was standing outside and looked up at those majestic light blue facades.
The grid of rectangular windows and the way they trimmed the curtains—some closed, some open, some half open—produced a pattern with surprising variations. Longley distilled arc segments, serif shapes, and other character elements from the curtain sections, assembling them to shape unique stencil letterforms. Blåkulla’s striking appearance creates a link between typography and architecture, with echoes of unknown lives lived behind those countless curtains.
