Locator Font Family

Originally started as a series of sketches for the University of Minnesota Design Institute’s ‘Typeface: Twin Cities’ competition, the typeface Locator was created for designers requiring a sans serif for text and display work. A range of six weights with italics for each are marked by an emphasis on horizontal movement, limited detail and refined presence.

As part of the original brief, Locator was intended to work equally well for text and display. Knowing the lowercase would cover the bulk of the text work, special attention has been given to the capitals for display and titling work. To extend Locator’s range even further, a companion set of display capitals – Locator Display – was designed later.

The ‘Typeface: Twin Cities’ project was later documented by Deborah Littlejohn in the book Metro Letters. Portions of the book are set in Locator.
