Presets are tools to enhance your image and will not always look best upon instant application. Minor tweaking of exposure/white balance may be necessary if colors are not natural.
After applying the preset to your image, make sure to adjust the exposure to fit your in camera settings that were used. I recommend shooting in RAW for the best results.
