Painting forest areas are super easy with landscape layer paint called "Forest Spawner". This transparent paint can be used to paint areas to populate with procedural foliage. There is a performance node in master landscape material that is not connected, connecting this will disable foliage interaction for the landscape foliage so that you don't need to disable it elsewhere. All foliage except trees use Global Wind System. Fully level designed 2x2 square km map. Background mountians are meshes so it will feel much more bigger.
