In our story, Level 1-Story 9, A Hug for Mom Hog, shows how Tot Hog loves to be in the mud. He sloshed all around, covering himself with wonderful gummy mud.After a while, Mom Hog saw Tot Hog and wanted to give him some gum, but when Tot Hog came out of the mud hut, he was covered from head to toe with gummy mud. He ran to his mom to give her a hug, but Mom Hog did not want to be covered with all that mud.After Tot Hog was finished playing in the gummy mud, mom gave Tot Hog a bath in a tub. She had to rub and rub to get all the mud off Tot Hog. After Tot Hog was all cleaned up, Mom Hog now wanted to give him a great big hug and emphasizes the value of personal cleanliness in the Main Idea of I Will Keep Myself Clean.”The story is written around the phonetic elements of the short ‘a, i, o, u’ and shows the reader how each letter is used in words.The PRESTORY BACKGROUND tells about hugging and when it’s OK to hug someone and when it’s not. It talks about who we can hug, when it’s OK to hug someone and at s to just shake hands and be friendly.LISTENING TO THE STORY WITHOUT NARRATION allows the student to hear the words pronounced along with viewing the story on screen, demonstrating the relationship between letters, words and sounds.PHONICS, WRITING AND SPELLING provides the student with creative ways to listen to their voice, and to recognize the sound that’s said by others.This section continues with activities for letters ‘a, i, o, u’ by using:· Ending sound blends· Contractions· Sound Sentences· Blends and Words to Sound, Read and Spell· Sight Words· Categorizing Words· Onomatopoeia, or the sounds that imitate an actionThe comma is introduced and many activities are shown to have the student use and understand the comma in reading and writing.FICTION NONFICTION WRITING emphasizes the story title, main idea and the specific genre of Animal Story/Fiction that A Hug for Mom Hog was written under.VOCABULARY AND EXPRESSIVE SPEAKING includes relevant phrases that enhances the student’s vocabulary and sight word mastery.
