Art Forms of Nature is a book by the German zoologist Ernst Haeckel , containing mainly lithographs . It was originally published in ten individual volumes between 1899 and 1904 and finally as a complete edition in 1904.

The book contains 100 prints with plates of various organisms, most of which were described by Haeckel for the first time. They represent a selection of the more than 1000 engravings that were made during Haeckel's lifetime based on sketches and watercolors . Haeckel commissioned the lithographer and printer Adolf Giltsch (1852-1911) to create the artistic figures and plates. He worked with him for a total of 42 years and corrected and improved Haeckel's drawings in many of his works with "lively interest" and the "knowledge-seeking urge of a true naturalist," as Haeckel acknowledged.

Particularly noteworthy are the depictions of various radiolarians , which have been particularly popular among amateur microscopists since the book's publication until today. A large number of other depictions show cnidarians , e.g. sea anemones , scorpion jellyfish and flag jellyfish . The first volume also contained Desmonema annasethe (now Cyanea annasethe ), a particularly magnificent jellyfish that Haeckel had named after his wife Anna Sethe.

In 1904, Haeckel once again explained the aim of the work: "The main purpose of my 'Art Forms of Nature' was an aesthetic one: I wanted to give wider circles access to the wonderful treasures of beauty that are hidden in the depths of the sea or, because of their small size, can only be seen through the microscope. But I also combine this with a scientific purpose, to gain insight into the miraculous structure of the peculiar organizations of these forms."
