Carolineale Font Family
Carolinéale is a type family which design is still in progress. I began its creation by entering in 2014 at the National Institute for Typographical Research (Atelier National de Recherche Typographique—ANRT), in Nancy, France.
The objective of this first period of research was then to study the Carolingian signs of the notation of the melody and to propose a contemporary interpretation of their shapes. Very quickly, to this first objective was added the one of drawing a type family for the Latin languages. As of this writing, Carolinéale gather two sets of musical signs (the so-called neumes of "St. Gall" and those from "Metz") as well as a complete "Roman" family ranging from ultralight to black, that goes allong with its proper italic. The publishing of this website is the opportunity for me to look back at the process of creating Carolinéale and to share with the world some visual sources behind the project. It is also an opportunity to share the current design process around Carolinéale. Indeed, the project has entered a new phase of development. The type family will soon be published by the PampaType foundry and distributed to the broader public. Carolinéale is therefore spreading its wings and confronts itself with new outlooks, before taking its full independence. The family is being refined, its forms are being sharpened and stabilized...
